Stars to Legends Tour set to visit Golden Sands Speedway
The Central Wisconsin Racing Association (CWRA) Stars to Legends Tour will hit Golden Sands Speedway Friday, Aug. 10, and it is looking like a four-driver race for the 2018 Season Championship.
Mark Mackesy of Wausau has led the point standings from the very beginning, but things have tightened up considerably after he had an off night at the last event.
The standings now find Mackesy with 471 points, followed by Jeff Weinfurter of Wisconsin Rapids (462), Darek Gress of Neillsville (455) and Darren Jackson of Wisconsin Rapids (424).
All but Jackson have scored main event wins during the season, but that could very well change, as Jackson gets to race at his “home” track, the high banked, high speed, 1/3 mile paved oval, Golden Sands Speedway.
A battle is still raging for the Rookie of the Year Title on the Tour as well, with Jesse Bernhagen of Stevens Point and Brian Henry of Omro, the top point getters of the rookie group competing. The Golden Sands event could go a long way in determining who receives those honors.
Mackesy, who has taken four main event wins on the Tour in 2018, has to be the favorite heading into the Aug. 10 event.
However, he will have competition from Gress, who has two Tour wins, and Weinfurter, who has also won two Feature events. Bernhagen has also won a main event and can’t be counted out for finding victory lane again.
The 2017 Tour Champion, Frank Nitzke of Berlin, has been shut out thus far in 2018, but maybe the Golden Sands event is where he finally lands in victory lane. Rachal Kallas of Winneconne and Derrick Van Dreel of Wisconsin Rapids were winners in 2017 but haven’t found the right combination to win with so far this year. The Golden Sands event could be their day to shine.
A field of 20 cars are expected for the evening race program, which will see racing begin at 7:45 p.m. Once again, as is customary for CWRA Stars to Legends Tour events, two Feature races will be held.
Superstocks, Pure Stocks, 4-Cylinder Cars and Trucks will also be on the night’s program.
